Validation report: STACKIT

Prev Next

This report documents a one-time validation. Lobster installed and tested the Lobster Data Platform (LDP) on STACKIT. STACKIT is a cloud platform from Schwarz Digits. It provides virtual machines, storage, databases, networking, and AI services.

Validation result: Passed

This report covers the Lobster Data Platform 26.3.1 on STACKIT in the eu01-1 region.

Executive summary

Lobster validated STACKIT as a deployment target for the LDP. The validation used the eu01-1 region in Germany. It passed with no blocking issues.

The standard installation process applied unchanged. The setup of the virtual machine (VM) was straightforward. Two provider characteristics required attention during provisioning:

  • The recommended database size of 4 vCPU with 16 GB RAM is not offered. The validation used 4 vCPU with 8 GB RAM.

  • The managed database is reachable only over a public IP address. The LDP connects to it over an external endpoint.

The network configuration in STACKIT can differ from other clouds. Firewall rules cannot be edited after creation. You delete a rule and create it again. You can set this up with the official STACKIT documentation. This point did not block the validation.

Scope and objectives

Purpose

This validation confirms that the LDP installs and runs on STACKIT infrastructure. It covers a single-node installation. It checks basic installability and core feature functionality.

This report is not a performance benchmark. It is not a security audit. It is not a production readiness assessment.

What was validated

  • Installation of the LDP on a Linux VM running AlmaLinux 9.

  • Connectivity between the application and a PostgreSQL database instance.

  • The execution of a sample end-to-end integration pipeline.

  • Basic platform stability, including service restart behavior.

What was not validated

  • High availability (HA) or multi-node deployments.

  • Performance under load.

  • Disaster recovery or backup behavior.

  • Long-term operational stability.

  • Provider-managed security controls or compliance posture.

Infrastructure topology

The Validated Deployment Targets program generally uses a Linux distribution from the RHEL family (RHEL = Red Hat Enterprise Linux). Options include RHEL, Fedora, CentOS, or AlmaLinux. The database is PostgreSQL.

This validation used AlmaLinux 9. See the software version table below.

The table below shows the target instance sizes. The minimum is the lowest acceptable configuration. The recommended size was used where STACKIT offered it.

This validation used a premium-perf2-stackit managed database instance. It provides 1000 IOPS and 100 MB/s throughput. The recommended size of 4 vCPU with 16 GB RAM is not offered, so the database ran with 8 GB RAM.

Installation summary

Lobster delivered the installer to the VM with SCP (SCP = Secure Copy Protocol). The installation followed the standard customer process. It used the installer GUI. The application VM had a public IP address. Java was installed with wget. The platform used HTTPS on the standard port 443. The application connected to the managed PostgreSQL Flex service on STACKIT. The database was reachable only over a public IP address, so the application used an external endpoint. The database name and database user are freely selectable. The license type was Standard. The network configuration was private: a separate VNET that is accessible only from the VM.

Recommended action

1

Provider

The recommended managed database size of 4 vCPU with 16 GB RAM is not offered. STACKIT provides 4 vCPU with 8 GB RAM or 4 vCPU with 32 GB RAM.

Medium

Select the size above or below the recommendation based on the expected workload. This validation used 4 vCPU with 8 GB RAM.

2

Provider

The managed database instance is reachable only over a public IP address. The LDP connects to it over an external endpoint.

Medium

Restrict database access with security group and firewall rules. Review the configuration against your own security requirements.

3

Provider

Firewall rules cannot be edited after creation. A rule has to be deleted and created again.

Low

Plan network changes as delete-and-recreate operations.

Customer relevance

STACKIT is a cloud platform from Schwarz Digits. It provides compute, storage, database, and network resources as well as AI services. The region used in this validation, eu01-1, is located in Germany. The Lobster Data Platform is validated for this environment. Customers can use STACKIT infrastructure to install and run the platform. This works like any standard cloud environment.

Revalidation

Lobster recommends revalidation under any of these conditions:

  • A major Lobster Data Platform release with infrastructure-relevant changes is published.

  • STACKIT changes a core service relevant to this installation, such as network, compute, or database.

  • 12 to 18 months pass from the date of this report, whichever comes first.
